how were African American artist able to use their works to promote cultural and social awareness?
The goals of the New Negro Movement that became known as the Harlem Renaissance were to create a public platform to showcase African American contributions to art and literature in opposition to the racist stereotypes that prevailed at the time. The harlem renaissance created a forum where blacks could showcase their many talents in a positive way; as such to revitalize their depressed neighborhoods. What was brought to the table was poetry, music, art, intelligence and a proper forum to let the world observe and see that african americans were more than just what was dictated by their skin color. Remember that no one has a choice to be born and no one can pick how they will look or what race they will be but one can define him/herself through their expression and their mind. This is what these people did and the world responded. Many elements of the harlem renaissance became the standard or integrated into mainstream society for example jazz music and the blues, black folk art many, many poems. Everything that the renaissance was about promoted cultural and social awareness and it also showed that blacks “these people” were talented, intuitive and intelligent.
